Scientific Dictionary

Only certain people need a scientific dictionary.  It provides a lot of information for scientists.  There are many different categories, or types, of these dictionaries.  They cover all the sciences from biology, chemistry, to physics and in others.  Let’s take a look at some of them.

Scientific Dictionary

The Internet is home to one particular scientific dictionary.  The name is Kimball’s Biology Pages.  Information there can be found through an alphabetic index or with a key word search.  Each letter of the alphabet links to an index of topics.  Here’s one.

The scientific dictionary has zygotene under the letter z.  It’s when cells separate into chromosomes.  This process only occurs in a certain type of cell.  That is, a cell within a membrane.

The scientific dictionary also contains information about chimera.  This is also called a genetic mosaic.  It’s when two early embryos combine into one.  This process has been known to occur in humans.  The word derives from a Greek myth – a creature with a lion’s head, a serpent’s tail and a goat’s body, and sometimes even more animal parts.

But chimera of mythology is not the same as the one found in the scientific dictionary.  It roamed Asia minor.  It was featured in the Iliad.  It was a fire breather.  In some stories it had three heads, one each of the lion, goat, and serpent.

The scientific dictionary doesn’t mention the chimera’s brother creature.  This is the famous Hydra.  This was another creature with multiple heads.  Hercules faced one of them.  If Hercules cut off one head, two more would grow from the neck.  Killing it wasn’t easy.

Another scientific dictionary is one that contains information on math for kids.  One of these, online, has Flash animations.  It’s full of information.  It covers the acute angle.  Any angle less than 90° is acute.  A cartoon pelican demonstrates the concept with its beak.

Another concept contained within this scientific dictionary is that of area.  This is the size a surface occupies.  To show this kids can drag various shapes over a grid and then count the number of squares taken up by the shape.  It also shows different units both standard and metric.

Scientific Dictionary

Almost anything is possible.  A scientific dictionary can be of use to anyone interested in the world around them.
